The short answer

Grade 7 science introduces the atom, which is the first model students cannot picture from experience. The year covers plant and human organ systems, healthy lifestyle and disease, atomic structure and the first 20 elements, chemical bonding, physical and chemical change, heat and temperature, waves, curved mirrors, motion and magnetism.

The first model with nothing to look at

Cells can be seen through a microscope. Protons and electrons cannot be seen at all, and Grade 7 asks students to accept a structure on the strength of what it explains rather than what it shows.

Electronic configuration for the first twenty elements is the year's most memorised item and the one most worth understanding instead. Once a student can see why the shells fill as they do, the periodic table in Grade 8 stops being a wall of symbols and becomes something with a logic to it.

Heat and temperature are not the same word

In ordinary speech they are interchangeable, and students bring that everyday usage into the laboratory. The consequence is a confident wrong prediction: the bigger beaker of water must be hotter, because there is more heat in it.

Temperature measures how fast the particles are moving; thermal energy also depends on how many there are. A spark and a bath can be the same temperature with completely different amounts of energy, and this distinction is what makes Grade 9 physics calculations work.

Ray diagrams for curved mirrors

Concave and convex mirrors are the hardest thing in Grade 7 physics, and it is fair to say so. The image can be real or virtual, upright or inverted, magnified or reduced, and which one it is depends on where the object sits relative to the focal point.

Guessing from the answer is common and unreliable. We insist on the construction — two standard rays drawn accurately, then read the image off the diagram — because the rules are consistent even when the results feel arbitrary.

What science is taught in Grade 7?

What is the difference between heat and temperature?

Temperature measures how fast particles are moving; heat is the energy transferred, and how much there is depends on how many particles there are as well as how fast. A spark and a bathful of water can be at the same temperature with entirely different amounts of thermal energy.

My child cannot do mirror ray diagrams. Is that unusual?

No — it is the hardest topic in Grade 7 physics and a great many students find it difficult. The reliable route is construction rather than recall: draw the two standard rays accurately and read the image off the diagram instead of trying to remember which case gives which result.
