Grade 5 science is about grouping things and telling one kind of change from another. The year covers classification of living things, microorganisms, flowers, seeds and germination, digestion and diet, pollution, physical and chemical changes, light and sound, electricity and magnetism, soil, the water cycle and the seasons.

Why scientists group things at all
Classification is taught as a set of names to learn, and that is why students find it dull. The reason it exists is prediction: knowing an animal is a mammal tells you things about it that nobody had to check individually.
Grade 5 is the right year to make that point, because the groups are about to multiply. Vertebrates and invertebrates, monocots and dicots, and then the whole of Grade 8 ecology sits on the same habit of grouping by shared features.
Not every microbe is a germ
Children meet bacteria first as the reason to wash their hands, so the category arrives already labelled dangerous. Yeast in bread, bacteria in yoghurt and fungi in the soil all contradict it, and are worth meeting in the same lesson.
Viruses are the genuinely hard case, and it is more honest to say so than to file them under living. They reproduce, but only inside another cell, and they do not feed or grow — which is exactly why biologists argue about them. A ten-year-old can hold that.
Melting is not a chemical change
Sugar stirred into water disappears, which looks like the most dramatic change available, so students classify it as chemical. Anything that changes appearance gets sorted the same way.
The test that works is whether a new substance has been made and whether the change can be undone. Evaporate the water and the sugar comes back unchanged; burn a piece of paper and nothing brings it back. Students who learn the test rather than a list of examples stop guessing.

What science should a Grade 5 student know?

Are viruses alive?
Biologists do not fully agree, and that is a reasonable thing to tell a ten-year-old. Viruses reproduce, but only inside a host cell, and they do not feed, grow or respond as other organisms do — so most textbooks place them at the edge of the living category rather than inside it.
How do I explain physical versus chemical change?
Ask two questions: has a new substance been made, and can the change be reversed. Dissolved sugar comes back when the water evaporates, so it is physical. Burnt paper does not come back, so it is chemical. The test travels better than a memorised list.
