Grade 7 Mathematics Tutoring

Live online Grade 7 maths in groups of five: rational numbers, square roots, proportion, Zakat and Ushr, polynomials, linear graphs, circles and prisms.

The short answer

Grade 7 mathematics makes algebra routine and adds the circle. The year covers rational numbers, squares and square roots, direct and inverse proportion, financial mathematics including Zakat and Ushr, algebraic expressions and polynomials, linear equations and their graphs, polygons, circumference and area, prisms and statistics.

What we cover in Grade 7 Mathematics

  • Rational numbers and the number line
  • Squares and square roots
  • Direct and inverse proportion
  • Financial mathematics: profit, loss, discount, taxes, Zakat and Ushr
  • Algebraic expressions and polynomials
  • Linear equations and their graphs
  • Quadrilaterals, polygons and circles
  • Constructing triangles and quadrilaterals
  • Circumference and area of a circle
  • Frequency distributions, mean, median and mode; probability

By the end of the year

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers and represent them on a number line.
  • Expand and simplify algebraic expressions and plot the graph of a linear equation.
  • Calculate the circumference and area of a circle and the volume and surface area of a prism.

Where students get stuck

  • Operations with negative fractions, and knowing whether to simplify before or after operating.
  • Swapping the circle formulas — using 2πr when area is required and πr² for circumference.

Negative fractions are two problems at once

Grade 6 taught negative integers. Grade 7 combines them with fractions, and a question like −3/4 − (−2/3) asks a student to run two rule sets simultaneously, either of which they may still be reconstructing rather than recalling.

The order of operations is the other half of it. Simplifying before operating is usually faster and sometimes wrong, and knowing which is which is a judgement rather than a rule — which is why students who have only ever followed procedures find this topic unexpectedly hard.

Which circle formula is which

Students swap 2πr and πr² constantly, and the correction that works is not repetition. Area is measured in square units, and the formula with the square in it is the one that produces them — a link that survives an exam in a way that memorised pairs do not.

Circles also introduce an irrational constant, which is worth a minute of honesty. π is not 22/7 or 3.14; both are approximations chosen for convenience, and the exact answer is often better left with the symbol in it.

Financial mathematics, including Zakat and Ushr

Pakistan's curriculum teaches profit, loss, discount and taxes alongside Zakat and Ushr, which makes this the most immediately usable topic of the year. Every one of them is a percentage of a quantity.

Students who learn them as five separate methods carry five things into the examination. Students who see that all five are proportion in different clothing carry one, and it is the same one that reappears in Grade 8 variation and in every real financial decision they will make.

Common questions

What maths topics are covered in Grade 7?

Rational numbers, squares and square roots, direct and inverse proportion, financial mathematics including Zakat and Ushr, algebraic expressions and polynomials, linear equations and their graphs, polygons and circles, construction, circumference and area, prisms, and statistics and probability.

How do I stop my child mixing up the circle formulas?

Tie the formula to the units. Area is in square centimetres, and πr² is the one with the square in it; circumference is a length, so it uses 2πr. Linking the two through units survives exam pressure better than memorising which is which.

Why is Grade 7 algebra harder than Grade 6?

Because it stops being a topic and becomes the notation everything else is written in — proportion, geometry and the science running alongside it. A student who is still translating each expression back into arithmetic pays that cost in every question, not only in the algebra ones.
