Grade 4 Online Tutoring

Live online classes for Grade 4, typically age 9. Long division, fractions, written methods and general science, taught in live groups of four.

The short answer

Grade 4 introduces the two topics primary students most often stall on: long division and fractions. Learning Loft teaches it online in groups of at most four across mathematics, science, English and Quran, in 45-minute sessions at typical age nine.

Long division is a tables problem in disguise

Almost every student who struggles with long division is not struggling with division. They are struggling because each step of it requires a multiplication fact they do not have to hand, so a four-step problem becomes twenty small problems and the thread is lost halfway.

That is why we check table recall before teaching the method rather than after. Fixing the tables usually fixes the division without the division ever being retaught.

Fractions are where confidence breaks

Fractions are the first point in school mathematics where the rules seem to contradict what a student already knows. Multiplying makes things smaller. A bigger denominator means a smaller piece. Two different-looking numbers are the same number.

Students who are told to follow the rule without seeing why it holds tend to decide at this point that they are 'not a maths person'. The topic is where a lot of long-term maths anxiety actually starts, and it is worth slowing down for.

Writing gets longer

English in Grade 4 moves towards multi-paragraph writing with structure, and science answers start to require a reason rather than a fact. Both are the same underlying skill: holding an idea across several sentences without losing it.

Common questions

Why does my child struggle with long division?

Usually because the times tables underneath it are not automatic. Every step of long division needs a multiplication fact instantly; without them the method becomes too many small calculations to hold together. Testing table recall first is more useful than reteaching the division.

What maths is covered in Grade 4?

Multiplication and division including formal written methods, fractions and equivalence, decimals in context, area and perimeter, and data handling. Pakistan's SNC, Cambridge Primary and the English curriculum broadly agree, with some resequencing between them.

My child says they are bad at maths. Is Grade 4 when that starts?

Frequently, yes — fractions are the common trigger, because the rules appear to contradict everything learned so far. It is much easier to address at nine than at fourteen, and it responds to explanation rather than to more practice of the same kind.
