The short answer
Grade 3 is the times-tables year, and the one that quietly decides how hard Grades 4 and 5 will be. Learning Loft teaches it online in groups of at most four across mathematics, science, English and Quran, at typical age eight.
Why times tables matter more than they seem to
Times tables look like memorisation, and are treated as a chore for that reason. They are actually the foundation every later topic is built on: long division, fractions, simplifying, ratio, factorising a quadratic seven years later. Each of those is slower and more error-prone for a student who has to work out 7 × 8 rather than know it.
The most useful thing a parent can do in Grade 3 is make table recall automatic. It is the highest-return fifteen minutes a day in primary school.
Written methods arrive
Column addition and subtraction become formal, and multiplication starts to be written down rather than counted. The risk is a student who can execute a method with no idea what it means — which works until the numbers change shape and there is nothing underneath to fall back on.
We teach the method alongside the reason. A student who can say why the digit is carried will recover from a slip; one who cannot will repeat it.
Science becomes explanation
Grade 3 science moves from noticing to explaining — plants, materials, forces, simple classification. Answers stop being one word and start being sentences, which is also where science and English start reinforcing each other.

Common questions
Which times tables should a Grade 3 student know?
By the end of Grade 3, confident recall of the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 tables, with the rest following in Grade 4. The exact sequence varies between the Pakistani, Cambridge and English curricula, but all three expect fluent recall rather than counting up.
How do I help with times tables at home?
Short and daily beats long and weekly — five to ten minutes, mixed order rather than chanted in sequence, and asked out of order so the answer is recalled rather than counted to. Chanting produces a child who can only find 7 × 8 by starting at 7 × 1.
Is Grade 3 too early to worry about maths?
It is the right time, and much easier than later. Gaps at this stage are small and quick to close; the same gaps at Grade 7 are buried under three years of work that assumed them.
