# Is Friday a School Day in the Gulf?
> **Answer.** Only in the UAE. Since January 2022 UAE schools have run Monday to Friday with Friday a half day, and Dubai's regulator now requires private schools to finish by 11:30 on Fridays. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain keep the Sunday-to-Thursday week, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend.
## What changed in 2022, and in one country only
On 1 January 2022 the UAE moved its federal working week to Monday–Friday, with Friday a half day and the weekend running Saturday and Sunday. Public and private schools followed. It was a genuine break with the regional pattern, and no other Gulf state has followed it since.
The Friday half day has since been shortened further. After the Friday sermon and prayer were moved forward to 12:45, Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority told private schools and the early childhood centres on their campuses to finish no later than 11:30 on Fridays, from 9 January 2026. Schools teaching Grade 6 and above may apply to move Friday learning online instead, with parental consultation and regulator approval.
So in the UAE, Friday is a school day — but a short one, ending before lunch, and for some year groups a screen rather than a classroom.
## Sunday to Thursday, still
The rest of the Gulf did not move. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain all run a Sunday-to-Thursday school week, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. Friday is not a shortened school day there; it is not a school day at all.
That produces a genuinely confusing map for anyone booking classes across the region, because two of the seven days mean opposite things depending on which side of the border a family lives on.
- Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain — school Sunday to Thursday; weekend Friday and Saturday
- UAE (most emirates) — school Monday to Friday, Friday a half day; weekend Saturday and Sunday
- Sharjah — a four-day week; Friday, Saturday and Sunday off
- So Sunday is a school day for most of the Gulf and a rest day in the UAE
- And Friday is a school morning in the UAE and a rest day everywhere else
## Why "weekend classes" means two different things
Our weekend timetable runs 10:00–20:00 PKT on Saturday and Sunday, and our weekday timetable runs 14:00–22:00 PKT from Monday to Friday. For a family in Dubai that maps neatly: our weekend is their weekend. For a family in Riyadh or Doha it does not map at all. Sunday, one of our weekend days, is the first day of their school week; Friday, their main free day, sits inside our weekday timetable.
The useful consequence is that Gulf families outside the UAE should be booking Friday slots from the weekday schedule. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait are two hours behind Pakistan, so our window opens at 12:00 local — too early, because that runs into Friday prayers. From about 15:00 local onwards the whole afternoon and evening is available, on the one day of the week a child has nothing else on.
UAE families get a slot nobody else does. School finishes by 11:30 on Friday, and our weekday window opens at 13:00 Gulf Standard Time. A Friday early-afternoon lesson is a school day for us and a free afternoon for the student, which is why it is the single most requested slot we have from the Emirates.
## What to check before you fix a weekly slot
The regulator sets the outer boundary; the school sets the timetable inside it. Two private schools in the same emirate can finish at different times on the same day, and a school that has moved Friday online for Year 7 may not have done it for Year 5.
Get the actual weekly timetable in front of you before you commit to a recurring slot, and check three things on it: the finishing time on the short day, whether after-school activities run on it, and what happens to the timetable during Ramadan. Every one of those has moved a booked class for someone.
- The school's finishing time on Friday or Thursday, not the regulator's maximum
- Whether co-curricular activities extend the day beyond the published finish
- The Ramadan timetable, which is issued separately and usually late
- Whether the emirate or country has its own weekend, as Sharjah does
## What changes the answer
- Sharjah is the exception inside the exception: the emirate runs a four-day week, so schools there close on Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday.
- A private international school in Saudi Arabia or Qatar keeps the host country's weekend even when it teaches a British or American curriculum, so the days are local even if the syllabus is not.
- During Ramadan the school day is shortened across the region, and older year groups in the UAE may be moved to online learning on Fridays.
- Universities and government offices do not always share the school week, so parents and children in the same household can have different weekends.
## Questions
### Is Sunday a school day in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Sunday is the first day of the school week in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. It is a weekend day in the UAE. This single difference causes more scheduling confusion than the time zones do, because most international scheduling tools assume a Monday-to-Friday week for everyone.
### Do UAE schools teach a full day on Friday?
No. Friday is a half day across the UAE, and in Dubai private schools have had to finish by 11:30 since January 2026, after Friday prayer times moved forward. Some schools with older year groups have permission to run Friday lessons online rather than on campus.
### Did the rest of the Gulf change its weekend when the UAE did?
No. The 2022 change was a UAE decision and the other Gulf states kept Friday and Saturday as the weekend. Four years on, nothing has changed, so guidance describing a uniform Gulf working week was wrong before 2022 and is wrong in the other direction now.
### Can we have a class on a Friday if we are in Doha or Riyadh?
Yes, and it is usually the best day. Friday afternoon and evening in Doha and Riyadh falls inside our weekday teaching window, and it is the one day with no school and no homework deadline the following morning. We would suggest booking from about 15:00 local, after prayers and lunch.
### What week do international schools in the Gulf follow?
The host country's. A British school in Riyadh teaches an English curriculum on a Sunday-to-Thursday week; a British school in Dubai teaches the same curriculum Monday to Friday. The curriculum travels; the calendar does not. Check the school's own weekly timetable rather than assuming its national badge sets the days.
