What Is on the Digital SAT Math Section?

The Digital SAT Math section runs 70 minutes across two 35-minute modules with 44 questions, and a calculator is allowed throughout. The method, step by step
Learn the shape of the section before anything else
Two modules of 35 minutes, 44 questions in total, a calculator permitted throughout and a formula reference sheet provided. Preparation built on the paper SAT's calculator and non-calculator split is preparing for a test that no longer exists, and that misunderstanding is still common in older material.
Understand what the adaptive stage does
The test adapts between modules rather than question by question, so performance on the first module decides the difficulty of the second. The first module therefore carries disproportionate leverage — it sets which score band is reachable at all, and there is no benefit to rushing it.
Weight your preparation by domain
Algebra and Advanced Math together account for 70% of the scored questions, which is where the time should go. Geometry and Trigonometry is 15% and rewards knowing which formulas are on the reference sheet, since anything provided does not need memorising.
Prepare for both answer formats
Three quarters of the questions are four-option multiple choice; the remaining quarter are student-produced response, where the answer is typed. That distinction matters strategically, because on a typed answer there are no options to substitute back, and none of the usual elimination tactics apply.
Build fluency with the tools before test week
The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook, and a student fluent with it converts several algebra questions into a graph read. That fluency is a skill to be practised over months rather than a feature to be discovered on the day, which is also true of knowing what the reference sheet contains.
Practise at the real pace
Seventy minutes across 44 questions is about a minute and thirty-five seconds each. Students who have only practised untimed do not discover their pacing problem until it costs them a module, and pacing is the one weakness that untimed practice actively conceals.
Two modules, 44 questions, 70 minutes
The Math section is delivered as two modules of 35 minutes each. Of the 44 questions, 40 are scored and four are embedded pretest items — two per module — which are unscored and indistinguishable from the rest. There is no way to identify them, and no value in trying.
Three quarters of the questions are multiple choice with four options, and a quarter are student-produced response, where students type their own answer. Around 30% of questions are set in a real-world context rather than as pure mathematics.

The four content domains and their weights
The scored questions are drawn from four domains with published weightings, and the balance is the most useful piece of information for planning preparation. Algebra and Advanced Math dominate; the other two together account for less than a third.
This is where most self-directed preparation goes wrong. Students tend to distribute revision evenly across topics, which spends nearly half the available effort on 30% of the paper. Weighting the work towards linear and non-linear equations is the highest-return decision available.

What the adaptive design means in practice
The Digital SAT is multistage adaptive: it adapts between modules, not question by question. Performance on the first Math module determines the difficulty of the second, and therefore which score range is reachable.
Two consequences follow. First, the first module deserves care rather than speed, because it is the module that sets the ceiling. Second, a student cannot judge their performance from how hard the second module feels — a harder second module is the signal that the first one went well, and students who read it the other way lose composure for no reason.
How we prepare students for the Math section
Our SAT preparation is timed against the real module structure from early on rather than at the end. Pacing is the weakness untimed practice hides, and 44 questions in 70 minutes is a constraint that has to be rehearsed rather than understood.
We spend deliberate time on the Desmos calculator and on the reference sheet, because both convert work into lookups. And we weight teaching towards Algebra and Advanced Math in the same proportion the test does, which for most students means more time on non-linear equations than their school course has given them.

Common questions
How long is the Digital SAT Math section?
Seventy minutes, delivered as two modules of 35 minutes each. There are 44 questions in total, which works out at about a minute and thirty-five seconds per question — a pace worth rehearsing under real timing rather than meeting for the first time on test day.
Is a calculator allowed on the whole SAT Math section?
Yes. There is no non-calculator module on the Digital SAT. Students may bring an approved calculator or use the Desmos graphing calculator built into the Bluebook application, and a reference sheet of common formulas is provided throughout.
