What "I'm bad at maths" usually actually means

It is almost never a statement about ability. It is a statement about a specific topic that broke, plus the feeling of sitting in a room where everyone else appears to have understood. Children do not have the words for "I never properly learned to divide fractions", so they compress it into four.

Maths is unusually unforgiving this way. In history, missing a topic costs you that topic. In maths, missing one quietly damages everything built on it. A child who never secured negative numbers struggles with algebra, then graphs, then any rearranged formula. The gap is small when it opens and large later.

The well-meant things that quietly make it worse

The most common is "I was terrible at maths too". It is offered as solidarity and lands as permission. You have just told your child that being bad at maths runs in the family, and that the adults they trust most gave up and turned out perfectly fine.

"Just try harder" assumes the problem is effort. Usually the child is trying hard at the wrong level. A student attempting quadratics while still counting on their fingers for times tables is working extremely hard and getting nowhere. More effort on the wrong rung produces more failure, faster.

Comparing to a sibling does the most damage per word. "Your sister never had this problem" tells the child the issue is who they are rather than what they were never taught. Avoid "you are just not a maths person" in all its forms.

What to say instead, in specific words

Replace judgements about ability with questions about where things last made sense. Every phrasing below does the same job: it moves the problem out of the child and into the material, where it can be worked on. Say them plainly, without the tone that signals a difficult conversation.

Praise with the same precision. "You are so clever" is fragile, because the next wrong answer quietly disproves it. "You checked your working and caught your own mistake" is durable, because it describes something they did and can choose to do again tomorrow.

Do not correct anything while this happens. The moment you start marking, it becomes a test and they close. Write down what you noticed afterwards. A tutor can do far more with "she is fine with fractions until division, and recites flip-and-multiply without knowing why" than with an hour of formal diagnostics.

Ask your tutor for specifics rather than reassurance. Which topic was the gap? What has been repaired? What is still fragile?
